Stand and Deliver

What did you learn about institutional racism and the hidden curriculum from this movie?

From the movie, I can easily see the message that the director was trying to get across. The message is that racism in American society is inevitable and will always place minority groups at a disadvantage. I learned that society places value on those of certain socioeconomic status. As we saw in the movie, the kids who passed the AP Calculus test from Garfield High were questioned solely because of their race and economic status. Their teacher, Jaime Escalante, knows and accuses the investigators of being racist explaining that if these students were from Beverly Hills High there would be no suspicions. Another thing I learned is the lessons that Jaime Escalante taught his children which would be known as the hidden curriculum. Some of the lessons included being on time to class, prioritizing one thing over the other, and even how to solve personal problems of the students.
